Summer - Task 3 & 4


1. Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
I like the style of music that the band creates and i have liked them for a while, also i am interested in this kind of music.
2. In what context did you encounter it?
I found clips on you tube and also hearing them on you tube and purchasing their songs on iTunes.
3. What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
To me it doesn't make a difference to how i interpreter the text because either way ill like the song as it has been well made, also i like that fact that the video is in black and white.
4. Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?
I would say that this particular song is very unique because of the colour scheme and the mise en scene so it makes the music video straight away recognizable.
5. To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
I fee
l that this video stretches the conventions as its different and again the colour and mise en scene is different to others.
6. Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
It didn't really stretch the conventions as it was nothing that i hadn't seen before. 
7. What sort of audience did you feel that the video was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre/style of music)?
I'd say that its aimed at people who like this sort of music and are a fan of the band or people who can relate to the lyrics within the song. it a typical genre as people who like the band and the music will also like the video.
8. What sort of person does it assume you are?
I'd say that the song associates you with 'common people'.
9. What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity?
it assumes that your between a certain age range and no matter what gender you are it depends on what music you like to whether you'll like the song and the video.
10. What interests does it assume you have?
it assumes you have interests in the band and the history of the band, also assuming that you like laid back music that's relaxing.
11. What relevance does the text actually have for you?
I like the camera shots and angles that they have chosen to use so it has inspired to me to ecorpurprate them into our music video.
12. What knowledge does it take for granted?
It takes the effects for making a video for granted as they have used so many in one video with a colour over and some bright colours included.
13. To what extent do you resemble the 'ideal reader' that the video seeks to position you as?
I feel that I am an ideal reader as I like this type of music as I like a wide range of music, no matter if you like or if you don't like it the video is of your choice to decide your own opinions.
14. Are there any notable shifts in the video's style (and if so, what do they involve)?
the video all seems to run smoothly throughout so there isn't really any quick shifts between the different scene changes.
15. What responses does the video seem to expect from you?
Personally I feel that its expecting a shocking reaction because its different from other videos that have already been produced.
16. How open to negotiation is your response (are you invited, instructed or coerced to respond in particular ways)?
I feel that your definitely invited to watch this because you just the audience as the band will continue as if you weren't there.
17. Is there any penalty for not responding in the expected ways?
No, it means you just don't appreciated the video for what it is.
18. To what extent do you find yourself 'reading against the grain' of the text and the genre?
This video goes against the grain a its not got any particular meaning behind it and the video doesn't really make sense.19. How typical do you think this video is of Music Videos?
I don't think that this is your typical music video I think it has an original idea behind it and also I feel that it stands out from others.

there is no relation between the lyrics and the visual apart from when he's holding the guitar in the video.
the video its self is quite plain apart from a few splashes of colours to brighten the video up.

there are close ups of the main singer throughout the video, also on the musicians
yes, there are close ups of the main singer at around 38 seconds, also on the musicians at about 56 seconds and they continue throughout.

there's references to the notion of looking throughout the video.
the lead singer is singing into the camera on many occasions for example at 68 and 87 seconds.
IS THERE INTER TEXTUAL REFERENCES?
there are no inter textual references as the song doesn't relate to the video.
there is an example of this at the start where he's sitting playing the guitar, there's no reason for him to be sitting there he just is, he's doing it with no reason for doing so.

1. Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
I chose this as i have liked the band for a while now and i really like the songs that they produce as a band, also i find the videos to the music videos eye catching.
2. In what context did you encounter it?
I first heard the band on the radio i then went onto buying their songs off of iTunes then listening to them on YouTube, however i found this music video when researching for this particular text.
3. What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
Watching the video to this song hasn't changed my interpretation of the text as i already liked the song before a video was released.
4. Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?
The style of music they produce is indie, this suits the style of the band by the way they act look and dress. The type of music id amplification music as the video is so simple and the shots give the video a simple structure.
5. To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
It didn't really stretch the conventions as it didn't have a lot of choreography in it, however saying that it did suit the mise en scene as the song is called 'girls' and there were girls dancing in the video but i don't feel that it stretched the conventions enough.
6. Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
Same as answer above.
7. What sort of audience did you feel that the video was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre/style of music)?
I feel that the audience for this sort of song category is older teenagers to young adults in their 20's as they way they dress could inspire some kids I think its quite a typical song as there is a lot out it at the minute.
8. What sort of person does it assume you are?
It makes you assume that there just here to listen to the song and through the video that they have created matches up with the words in the song so that It corresponds.
9. What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity?
It assumes you between a certain age range of 14-21 and its being aimed at both genders.
10. What interests does it assume you have?
It could presume that you are interested into new music, but it could have two other meanings of interests depending on the genre, for example the lads would want to watch the video as there are girls in it and on the other hand the girls will be interested in the band its self.
11. What relevance does the text actually have for you?
The text has relevance to me as i love their type of music and the overall look of the band together, also i like the way they have produced the video to match the words in the song.
12. What knowledge does it take for granted?
It doesn't really take anything for granted because there just behaving the same as if they weren't being filmed.
13. To what extent do you resemble the 'ideal reader' that the video seeks to position you as?
As i like the style of music that has been produced i could see myself as the reader as even without a video to their song the music is catching your attention.
14. Are there any notable shifts in the video's style (and if so, what do they involve)?
There are noticeable shifts throughout but with out them it couldn't work as the music video with this particular video.
15. What responses does the video seem to expect from you?
From me it doesn't really get much of a response as its like other videos and stuff like it has been done before so it not that attention grabbing.
16. How open to negotiation is your response (are you invited, instructed or coerced to respond in particular ways)?
The video is definitely inviting you to watch the video as there making the video for a reason for an audience to watch.
17. Is there any penalty for not responding in the expected ways?
No, however you don't experience their style of music.
18. To what extent do you find yourself 'reading against the grain' of the text and the genre?
This video is going against the grain, however its a genuine video for the human eye and therefore don't experience this.
19. How typical do you think this video is of Music Videos?
Its nothing i haven't seen before so its not that surprising so yes i would say its your typical music video.

as the song is about girls visually we can see girls in the video that they have made so it corresponds to the song.
at around 42 seconds we first see an image of a girl this is when we first start to see the relationship between lyrics and visual.

the music is quite funky and exciting, also visually we can see that the girl seem quite happy and quirky shooting the video.
at 1 minute 10 seconds we see the visual image of expression on their faces.

yes there are close ups on the main singer and on the guitarists throughout the video.

there is reference to the notion of looking throughout this whole video.
on every shot that we see we can see that the lead singer is looking at the camera each time.

the video is both illustration and amplification as everything the song is singing there are people representing that.

I like P!nk's song's and with this one especially I love the dancing that's been choreographed.
2. In what context did you encounter it?
I first heard her songs a few years back on the radio but now I tend to watch the videos on YouTube and use her dances to breakdown and use in my own.
3. What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
It hasn't influenced my interpretation as i like both the video and the song and their bot well made so it catches your attention.
4. Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?
The lyrics are made to match the video that has been made so it matches up, this is what i would expect for a song in this genre category.
5. To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
I personally would say that this stretches the conventions of the genre showing both a boy and a girl and the way in which it had been choreographed its the meaning of the song.
6. Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
This video is full with illustration features for example when she sings 'you gotta get up and try' both dancers get up and continue to dance, this is a prime example of illustration.
7. What sort of audience did you feel that the video was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre/style of music)?
I feel that this sort of video would be aimed at the ages of 16-24 year Old's, just from the way the video has been produced and the age of people who go to see her live in concert.
8. What sort of person does it assume you are?
This assumes that you are a person that really appreciates and in this particular also likes dance too.
9. What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity?
it assumes you at an age where your interested in music and purely in dance from watching the video so I would say if an age range was to be set it would be 14-18 years. for both genders both male and female.
10. What interests does it assume you have?
this video assumes that you have a strong interest in dance as its a passionate style with a  meaningful dance.
11. What relevance does the text actually have for you?
I love dancing and I've done it ever since I was young so watching the dance inspires me and grabs my attention.
12. What knowledge does it take for granted?
The video doesn't seem to take anything for granted apart from the fact they can express feeling and emotion through there dance moves.
13. To what extent do you resemble the 'ideal reader' that the video seeks to position you as?
Yes i would say that people my sort of age are the target audience for this video as its inspiring.
14. Are there any notable shifts in the video's style (and if so, what do they involve)?
Not really as the music video is shot in two places and you can tell the difference but it all flow consistently into the next frame, as when there dancing its all in the house and they use the space to their advantage.
15. What responses does the video seem to expect from you?
I feel that the video isn't expecting any particular response as its your personal opinion of what style of video your expecting and weather you like dance or not.
16. How open to negotiation is your response (are you invited, instructed or coerced to respond in particular ways)?
You are definitely invited to watch this video from looking at it either way it a really good song and it also has a really good video to go with it.
17. Is there any penalty for not responding in the expected ways?
No, the song can give you your own opinions about it if its not interpreted in the right way.
18. To what extent do you find yourself 'reading against the grain' of the text and the genre?
The video its self comes across as pretty clear to read and understand, there's noting really to interpreter from this.

its different but its nothing that hasn't been done before in previous videos.
